A05: Clustering in nuclei: Halo nuclei and alpha clustering

Project A05 will investigate the nature of cluster degrees of freedom in nuclei and their theoretical description. Alpha clustering is already important in some light nuclei such as 12C. It becomes more extreme at the neutron dripline where loosely bound neutrons decouple from the core, formed by the rest of the nucleus, and a halo nucleus emerges. We will explore both, how alpha clustering develops in neutron-rich systems, as well as the structure of heavier halo nuclei, where configuration mixing is expected to become important.
